A cable that connects to two computers does not prove that both operating systems can read and write the disk's current file system. Physical connection, file-system support, encryption and the files themselves are separate checks. Record the existing state before taking any action that could change data.
This is a pre-use inspection workflow. Formatting is not its default troubleshooting step. If the disk holds important data, preserve it and establish an appropriate backup before considering any destructive operation.
Build a two-system matrix
| Field | Computer A | Computer B |
|---|---|---|
| OS and version | ____ | ____ |
| Physical host interface | ____ | ____ |
| Existing volume format | Same disk: ____ | Same disk: ____ |
| Documented native read support | ____ | ____ |
| Documented native write support | ____ | ____ |
| Encryption / required software | ____ | ____ |
| File-size or feature requirement | ____ | ____ |
The same format name in two columns is not enough if one system's support is read-only or depends on software that is not installed or permitted.
Read the official scope
Apple's Disk Utility guide for macOS 26 describes APFS for macOS 10.13 and later and identifies FAT and ExFAT among Windows-compatible options. Microsoft's file-system comparison documents differences in Windows file-system features. These sources support a format investigation; they do not establish every possible cross-system configuration or all third-party software behavior.
For a hypothetical disk with an unknown existing format, the first decision is to identify it through a non-destructive system information view. Do not select an erase or initialize action merely because another computer cannot immediately use it.
Match the format to the actual task
A shared-drive plan may need large files, permission behavior, encryption or application-specific metadata. Record those needs before choosing a format. A generic “works on both” phrase can conceal a feature the workflow relies on.
If support depends on a driver or utility, confirm the exact software, OS version and licensing or installation conditions from its official documentation. Mark unsupported or unverified combinations honestly.
Finish with a safe next action
A complete result says what the disk currently is, what each system can do with it and which requirement remains unresolved. If a change is needed, make a separate data-preservation and migration plan rather than treating this checklist as authorization to erase. This guide offers source-based checks and claims no physical disk test or guarantee against data loss.
Sources and scope
Official documentation checked October 17, 2026. The exact models, versions and conditions below matter.
- Apple Disk Utility: file-system formats, macOS 26 — APFS is for macOS 10.13 and later; the guide identifies FAT and ExFAT as Windows-compatible format options. It is not a recommendation to erase an existing disk.
- Microsoft: file-system functionality comparison — Windows file-system feature comparison; specific features and constraints depend on the chosen format.
