A USB-C monitor connection can be convenient, but “one cable” conceals several separate functions. Video, USB data and charging must each be supported by the relevant devices and connection. A single positive field does not establish the others.
Write the exact computer and monitor models at the top of the sheet. State your task: display an image, use the monitor's connected USB accessories, charge the computer, or all three. This avoids paying for a feature you do not need while overlooking one you do.
Split the specification into three rows
| Function | Monitor-side evidence | Computer-side evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Video | USB-C video mode, accepted timing | That port's video output and target mode |
| Data | Upstream data function and published rate | Host data mode and any required cable |
| Charging | Published USB-C power delivery limit | Device input requirements and supported charging port |
Then add a cable row with its documented data, video and power suitability for the selected task. Do not infer it from the plug shape or from the fact that the cable charges another device.
A real specification, with limits kept visible
BenQ's PD2705U page lists USB-C with DP Alt Mode, data and 65 W power delivery. This establishes the three advertised monitor functions for that model. It does not establish that a particular laptop can receive its required power, output the target video mode and exchange data over the chosen cable.
For a hypothetical laptop whose official requirements exceed the monitor's documented output, record the charging question as unresolved or insufficient for the stated requirement. Do not call the connection a complete charger replacement simply because a battery icon appears in an unrelated example.
Keep combinations separate from individual maxima
A summary may list maximum data speed and maximum video capability without explaining every simultaneous operating combination. Look for the actual monitor manual's connection or mode settings when the workload depends on both. Leave any undocumented combined behavior unconfirmed.
The same rule applies to ports: a computer can have more than one USB-C-shaped port with different functions. Identify the exact side or labeled port rather than copying the capability of its neighbor.
Decide what remains usable
If video is confirmed but charging is not, the setup may still serve a display task with the computer's appropriate separate power supply, subject to the documented arrangement. That is a different plan from a verified all-in-one-cable setup. Keep the table's three statuses independent so one missing function does not become either a false promise or an unnecessary rejection of every other use.
Sources and scope
Official documentation checked October 17, 2026. The exact models, versions and conditions below matter.
- BenQ PD2705U specifications, Canada — PD2705U: 27-inch 3840 × 2160, 60 Hz; HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.4 and USB-C with DP Alt Mode, data and 65 W power delivery. This summary is not a complete per-input timing/color-depth table.
- Dell Inspiron 16 5640 owner manual: external ports — This model lists USB-C 10 Gbps with DisplayPort 1.4 and Power Delivery, two USB 5 Gbps ports, a headset combo port, and HDMI limited to 1920 × 1080 at 60 Hz despite the HDMI 1.4 designation.
- USB-IF data-performance language guidelines (January 2024) — USB data performance labels include 5, 10, 20, 40 and 80 Gbps; connector shape alone does not supply a performance claim.
