A port outline helps you identify where to connect something, but it does not establish every function behind it. Several ports on one computer can look similar while offering different data rates, charging behavior or display support. Begin with the exact computer model, not a generic image of the connector.
Find the manufacturer's specifications or owner manual and use its external-ports section. Record which physical port the description identifies. If the computer has model or configuration variants, check that the document matches yours.
Make a capability card
| Port field | Evidence to record | Status if missing |
|---|---|---|
| Physical connector | Manual's labeled port diagram | Location unconfirmed |
| Data | Published performance description | Data rate unconfirmed |
| Video | Display output capability and mode limits | Do not infer video from shape |
| Power | Input/output role and documented conditions | Charging role unconfirmed |
| System conditions | Required OS, driver or configuration | Check before relying on the feature |
Keep a direct source link and section name on the card. A retailer's shortened bullet list is less useful than the model's own limitations.
A manual can narrow a familiar interface name
The Dell Inspiron 16 5640 manual identifies two USB 5 Gbps ports and one USB-C 10 Gbps port with DisplayPort 1.4 and Power Delivery. It also specifies an HDMI limit of 1920 × 1080 at 60 Hz, despite listing HDMI 1.4. That last fact is why a general interface-version table cannot replace the computer's own documented mode limit.
Do not transfer these capabilities to another Inspiron model or to every USB-C port. The model, port location and manual are part of the claim.
Distinguish evidence levels
Use confirmed when the exact model document states the capability under the relevant conditions. Use unsupported when it explicitly rules the capability out. Use unconfirmed when the material you found is silent or ambiguous. Silence is not proof of support or a definitive rejection.
For a hypothetical unmarked USB-C port whose manual lists data only, record video as unconfirmed unless another exact-model source settles it. Buying an adapter does not fill that documentation gap.
Keep the card with the task
Before selecting an accessory, put the required function beside the confirmed port field. A data-only task needs different evidence from driving a display or charging the computer. This is a source-based identification workflow; it does not claim that this site examined or tested the physical port.
Sources and scope
Official documentation checked October 17, 2026. The exact models, versions and conditions below matter.
- Dell Inspiron 16 5640 owner manual: external ports — This model lists USB-C 10 Gbps with DisplayPort 1.4 and Power Delivery, two USB 5 Gbps ports, a headset combo port, and HDMI limited to 1920 × 1080 at 60 Hz despite the HDMI 1.4 designation.
- USB-IF data-performance language guidelines (January 2024) — USB data performance labels include 5, 10, 20, 40 and 80 Gbps; connector shape alone does not supply a performance claim.
